I usually put my cell phone on the table and inform the wait staff that it is in the voice recorder mode. Then I proceed with my order and also state that if any of the items I have identified as allergens turn up in my order, they will be getting to know my attorney very closely after I am discharged from the hospital.

Heather, I've never known another person allergic to tomatoes before! I'm sorry to hear, but glad to know I'm not alone.

After reading this and previous posted comments on food allergy-based articles it seems to me that the negative comments are more about prejudices. These anonymous commenters don't want to acknowledge differences in others and deem it a burden to themselves to have to "cater" to them. I'm not so sure educating them about food allergies will even help, unfortunately. They've already made up their minds. The good news is that there are some restauranteurs and servers who are completely sensitive to our plight, so there is hope for the restaurant business. Bottom line, Mr. Kenny Shopsin: Food service is just that...a SERVICE. To be successful in any business means that the customer is always right. Your business revolves around making your patrons happy, that's what they pay for. Big egos sink ships, that's a good way to go out of business. But let's not allow these anonymous commenters stop us from furthering our fight in educating others on food allergies. The 12 million reported individuals with food allergies certainly aren't "just faking it."

Those who do not believe tomatoes can be an allergy can go talk to my allergist, and the local ER docs. Last year, I went to the ER almost every two weeks because I had an unknown food allergy that was later found to be tomatoes. One of my cheeks swelled out so bad, they thought I'd been in an accident. People who think food allergies are faked just don't understand, and they have never witnessed them first hand, nor have they gone through the pain and anxiety that comes with simply going to a friend's house for a party.

It makes me so mad that people are so uneducated on such a common issue. I hate going places and asking for no this or that on a meal and having people say "You can't really be allergic to that!!!" Actually I am and you have no idea how much I would love to eat it. Thank you to all the recent websites and news articles that highlight the dangers of food allergies. Thanks for this website and I look forward to reviewing and reading reviews.

Most of these comments are infuriating! Thank yo for pointing this out. This is why we in the food allergy community need to be vigilant about education. I know that those who have seen my son have a reaction will never be the same and have in turn educated others. This is why I support Allergy Eats and use the restaurants reccomended by its readers and why my family works with FAAN to support research and education. Keep it up Paul!

Wow, that last quote from Kenny Shopsin is all I needed to get fired up. Wow, that's a disgusting attitude for someone in the food service industry to have.

So, if he was having a heart-attack, using a defibrillator is a level of a**-kissing that the Paramedic shouldn't have to provide?
